Thirteen-year-old visitor Summer Walker was at Charley Young Beach around 9:30 a.m. Thursday when two Hawaiian monk seals silently rose out of the water, played together for about three minutes and then disappeared. “It was weird,” said Summer, who will be in the 8th grade this fall in Newport Beach, Calif. “It was really cool.” She said swimmers and paddleboarders who were in the water just a few feet away didn’t even notice the seals, but everybody on the sand did. Her father, Trent Walker, said locals told him how unusual the exhibition was, and he urged Summer to submit the pictures to The Maui News. Summer was shooting with her dad’s Canon 30D camera, which she had bugged him to let her use. “I told her she could after she had read the manual,” he said. “She read it all.”

Arthur Brooks makes the case that the free enterprise system fosters the pursuit of happiness:

A vibrant free-enterprise system is vital for the pursuit of happiness, because it makes earned success possible for the greatest number of people. It does so in three ways, says Brooks. First, it creates optimism by giving people the opportunity to better themselves through hard work and perseverance — to “reinvent themselves.” We know this as the American Dream.

Second, a free-enterprise system helps people to create meaning by enabling them to find work that matches their skills and passions. Americans are 46 percent likelier than the heavily taxed and regulated French, 52 percent likelier than Germans and 190percent likelier than the Spanish to say they are “completely satisfied” with their jobs, according to Brooks.

Finally, the free-enterprise system creates happiness by giving people control over their daily lives. Flourishing, happy people believe they can determine their own destinies through hard work, while people who feel powerless are the most miserable.

Gov. Chris Christie calls for Republican Party rebranding

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Tuesday in an interview with POLITICO outlined a path for the GOP to rebrand as the party keeping "our eye on the cash register,” while also praising some Democrats for taking the right approach to tackling major issues like education.

Asked over a breakfast of eggs with cream cheese, scallion and whole wheat toast– but no coffee, which he steers clear of – what he thought Republicans should run on, Christie suggested charting a course of fiscal conservatism.

“They should be talking about treating people like adults and telling them the truth: we’re in huge trouble,” he said. “And it’s going to mean cutting back on a lot of things that folks either have become used to or in a perfect world would like to have.”

Christie’s budget cleared after a legislative battle in which he won the bare minimum of Democratic votes he needed to get it through. Now, he’s calling back the legislature to focus on his 2.5 percent property tax cap proposal, which he’d like to see put on the ballot this fall – a move that requires lawmakers’ approval.Read more:
